Unquestionably on a short list for the most haunted places in the world, Italy’s haunted Poveglia Island will literally make your bones chill.
Originally used as an isolated area to quarantine those infected by the Black Death, Italy’s haunted Poveglia Island saw its fair share of sinister behavior and inhumane experiments over the years. ↗️
Following thousands of people stuck dying on the island from the pandemic, the more sinister acts came in 1922 when a mental health institution was erected on the 17-acre island.
Led by a notorious doctor, the mental institution became a dark place for experiments that administered no anesthesia and had zero regard for sanitization.
The doctor would regularly carry out lobotomies which involved stabbing through the patient’s eye socket with an ice pick to access parts of the brain in an apparent attempt to cure mental illness.
Electroconvulsive therapy was also one of the key experiments the doctor regularly tried, but he was seemingly led down a dark path within his own mind and took to darker secret experiments in the island bell tower.
No one knows exactly what the experiments consisted of, but the screams from the victims could be heard across Italy’s haunted Poveglia Island.
The doctor was said to be killed by a spirit that pushed him off the bell tower, but a nurse from that time claimed he was pushed, but survived the fall, only to be suffocated by a dark entity on the ground.
Italy’s haunted Poveglia Island now stands as one of the most haunted places in Europe and arguably the most haunted place on the planet. Though special permission is required from the Venetian government, many have traipsed through the overgrown greenery and facility ruins to discover their own paranormal experiences.
Visitor have reported ghosts, sounds and interaction with sprits and on two separate occasions there have been a report of one person being pushed off the edge of the island into the ocean, while another claim to have been taken to the ground by an unseen force and strangled.
Although maybe still second to Aokigahara Forest for the most haunted place on earth, Poveglia has active paranormal activity and was listed as #2 on AHistoryOfMystery’s Most Haunted Places of all time.
Visitors and locals claim that they can still hear the island’s bell ringing in the distance late at night and many won’t even go there, making this rank Italy’s most haunted place, even more so that the Italian Catacombs of Palermo.
